The code provides guidelines for conduct in carrying out
responsibilities consistent with high quality stomaltherapy nursing
care.
A stomaltherapy nurse in South Africa shall be registered with the South
African Nursing Council and shall adhere to the Standards for Nursing
Practice (March 1992), thus practising within the scope which is legally
permissible for his/her specific practice.
A stomaltherapy nurse provides a service characterised by respect for
human dignity regardless of race, color, creed, sex, social or economic
status or the nature of the health problem.
Professional conduct includes the principles of confidentiality,
honesty, truthfulness, caring , and beneficence toward toward all.
Respect for the client autonomy is paramount, requiring the
stomaltherapy nurse to assume responsibility and accountability for the
individual nursing judgements and actions , but in collaboration with
medical and nursing colleagues.
A stomaltherapy nurse maintains competence and participates in the
activities that contribute to the ongoing development of stomatherapy
nursing.
Thoughtless or deliberate conduct which threatens or damages the image of the profession is regarded as unethical.
A stomaltherapy nurse should not promote commercial products for the
sake of commercial considerations but should always apply competent
clinical judgement in his/ her making.
