What is a stomaltheropy

Stomaltherapists - trained Clinical Nurse Specialists, who are members of the South African Stomaltherapy Association (SASA).

Stomaltherapists provide peri-operative care and operate at STOMA CLINICS
for advice and product.

Stoma Clinics

After you have been discharged, you will arrange an appointment to see your stomaltherapist at a stoma clinic. She will:-

  • check your stoma
  • answer any queries
  • help you to select the most appropriate and cost effective product and tell you where to purchase it

It is recommended that you visit your stomaltherapist twice a year for a check up and find out about the latest products on the market.

Booklets - are provided on the different operations free of charge. Please ask your surgeon or stomaltherapist for a copy.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! You are a special individual and answers pertaining to your return to work, sport and sexuality will be tailor-made to suit you and your situation.

Code of Nursing practice

A code of nursing practice is essential to establish professional standards which define the individual's responsibility to the profession.

The Stomaltherapist has a professional obligation to adhere to the Code of Nursing Practice established by the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

  • The Stomaltherapist will provide needed service to persons irrespective of race, colour, creed, sex, sexual preference, age, political or social status

  • The Stomaltherapist respects the beliefs, values and customs of the individual and maintains his/her right to privacy by maintaining confidentiality, sharing with others only that information relevant to his/her care

  • have an appropriately positioned stoma site
  • have a well constructed stoma
  • have skilled postoperative nursing care
  • have emotional support
  • have individual instruction
  • be informed on the availability of supplies

  • have post hospital follow up and life long supervision
  • benefit from team efforts of healthcare professionals
  • be provided with information and counsel from the Ostomy Association and its members
